"Anthroposophia, the Human Voice, and the Birth of Jesus of Nazareth" by Rick Distasi

Eurythmy is based on the premise that in human language and speech vowels are planetary and consonants are zodiacal. It is the twelve primary consonant sounds emanating from the twelve various constellations that weave through the human body and form the human body. In addition, the seven primary vowel sounds emanate from the seven primary planets of our solar system. As the human Ego is able to vocalize these twelve basic consonant sounds and these seven vowel sounds this gives the human body the capacity to produce various physical gestures.

To continue, the twelve constellations form the twelve major sections (head, feet, knees, abdomen etc.) of the human body. The consonants can be understood to be masculine. Whereas, the seven planetary vowels are feminine in nature and they in turn formulate the organs of the human body.

Also, I can't speak with absolute certainty on the following. There are twelve major meridians of life force that permeate the human body. It would seem that these meridians are a combination of both astral and etheric forces formulating into twelve major streaming life-meridians throughout the human body.

When we descend to earth we pass through the Moon sphere of Jehovah. It is Jehovah that finalizes the process of formulating our new physical, mineral body. This was the single most reason why Jehovah was referred to as Father. In the name Jehovah there is the interplay between the masculine consonants and the feminine vowels. Proceeding further, we are directed to the Moon Eloha, Father Yahweh, and the earth Mother forces. Though earth is our home, the other primary planets are essential in the makeup of our physical organs. The singular essence of the Moon-Yahweh is masculine while the plural or communal essence of earth and her ancillary, subsidiary sister-planets are feminine.

All of this, both macrocosmically which streamed from the planets and constellations and microcosmically which was found in a singular human voice came together in fashioning the physical body of Jesus of Nazareth. These macrocosmic forces converged within the microcosmic larynx of the Being Anthroposophia during the gestation period of Jesus of Nazareth.

The human larynx is the physical organ for the anastomosis processes between the spiritual and the physical It coalesces the masculine and the feminine, the constellations and the planets, Yahweh/Father and Mother/Earth, the Breath-Ruach-Spirit and the physical tissue of the larynx, the conjoining of vowels and consonants. This conjoining of vowels and consonants and all the aforesaid begets a sacred coitus between the spiritual and the physical, the feminine and the masculine. All of it consolidates and unites within the activity of the spiritualized larynx; the future organ of procreation.

In the Gospel of Luke our attention is directed to a unique human Being who had never before incarnated until then and has never incarnated again since then. Was this the Being, Anthroposophia? Some have postulated that this was so and with good reason. Mary of the Luke Gospel, whom we may refer to as Anthroposophia, carried the body of Jesus of Nazareth within her. It is the assertion of this essay that her larynx was an extraordinary and exceptional spiritual organ. Moreover, through it she was able to draw into her own etheric body the Eternal Feminine Principle that helped shape and formulate the physical body of Jesus of Nazareth. The macrocosmic Eternal Feminine of the Divine Sophia and Anthroposophia's own microcosmic Eternal Feminine as an incarnated human Being interweave with the microcosmic physical elements of the masculine body of Jesus of Nazareth coupled with the macrocosmic masculine elements which Vidar brought to bear during the gestation period of Jesus of Nazareth. As miraculous as all of this was it was only a foreshadow of its culmination some 30 years later. Its culmination came to fruition with the first sign performed by Christ: the Marriage at Cana. Through this Holy Rite at Cana the Christ and the Sophia became One. At Cana Christ poses the question to Mary of the Matthew Gospel whose soul was integrated by the Divine Sophia: "What weaves between You and Me?"

The answer may be summed up with the following: It is the Universal eternal devachanic, astral, etheric, physical feminine interweaving with the Universal eternal devachanic, astral, etheric, physical masculine.

"The physical body doesn't belong to us, it's an optical illusion. It's formed by streams that go out from Thrones. Imagine brooks that flow together; a whirlpool arises where they meet. Likewise the physical body arises where streams from Thrones come together. The black cross represents the lower animal part of man that must be overcome. The seven red roses must sprout and flower out of it. A beautiful story tells us that when Christ hung on the cross, bees came and drew honey from his bleeding wounds, as from red roses otherwise. The blood's composition had changed through the sacrifice and had become like the sap of red roses." (Rudolf Steiner: Hamburg, March 14, 1909).

In the Luke Gospel, the activity of the Christ’s Cosmic, Universal Ego is the Holy Spirit that spiritually inseminates the Virgin Sophia, the purified astral body, of Anthroposophia which then gives her voice the capacity to shape and mold the initial embryo and subsequent fetus of the body of Jesus of Nazareth. Regarding the Luke Gospel, Steiner, in his own lectures, makes it clear that Jesus of Nazareth was conceived physically and that it was not a miraculous conception. The physical conception of the Nathan-Jesus was most likely also induced by means of a temple ritual of insemination free of passion to which Steiner asserts that Joseph was the father of the Nathan-Jesus.
In the first two chapters of the Luke Gospel great emphasis is placed upon some form or another of vocal expression. The Luke Gospel’s focus on the different voices and their powerful significance throughout the first two chapters is a prominent component of these early chapters; such as, the impact of Mary’s greeting to Elizabeth, Gabriel's Annunciations, the angel 'announcing' to the shepherds, and even the loss of Zachary's voice. When we examine Mary's role in the Luke Gospel, however, there are two passages that are exceptionally notable and compel one's attention.

They are the following: Luke 1:41-42: "And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe in her womb leapt. And Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, and cried out with a loud voice . . ." And when Elizabeth speaks to Mary: Luke 1:44: "For behold, the moment that the sound of thy greeting came to my ear the babe in my womb leapt for joy." From the Luke cycle Steiner makes it clear that Mary's visit to Elizabeth ignited the Ego of John the Baptist within the fetus. In Lecture V Steiner had said, ". . . and the embryo that in other cases is quickened by its own Ego was here quickened through the medium of the 'other' embryo." In Lecture VI from the same cycle we read, "A human body of great perfection had to be made available, one that could only be produced through part of the etheric substance of Adam - untouched by all earthly influences - being united with the etheric body of this Jesus-child. This etheric substance was imbued with the forces that had worked upon Earth evolution before the Fall and now, in the Jesus-child, their power was immeasurably enhanced. This made it possible for the mysterious influence referred to in the lecture yesterday to be exercised by the mother of the Nathan Jesus upon the mother of the Baptist --- that is to say upon John himself before he was born."

It was both the presence of Anthroposophia and the Nathan soul within the womb of physically incarnated Anthroposophia as Mary that quickened the Ego of John the Baptist within the womb of Elizabeth. When Mary first greeted Elizabeth the Ego of John the Baptist was simultaneously invigorated by the spirit essence of the Nirmanakaya of Buddha that was streaming into the soul of the Nathan Jesus-child at that time. As the Nathan soul carried the pure etheric forces of the Tree of Life within him so too did Anthroposophia harbor within her the 'pure' etheric substance of the sound and life ethers. This pure, 'virginal', etheric substance may be referred to as the Eternal Feminine. It was this virginal, etheric, life-forming substance which flowed through Anthroposophia.
Human speech creates unseen forms in the etheric realm. Likewise, throughout the entire pregnancy, the virginal Eternal Feminine forces that flowed from Anthroposophia's voice became predominantly active in fashioning the perfected human body that would later hold the Christ Being; the Logos World-Word.

It may be proposed that the Christ-imbued astral body of Anthroposophia was interactive with the Manas element of the former angel of Buddha who was identified earlier in this work as Vidar. In Lecture I from "The Theosophy of the Rosicrucian" Rudolf Steiner states the following in regard to the long history of the evolution of the human physical form. Thereby, framing how the effects of astral pictures in the souls of human Beings subsequently shaped the human physical body: “Just as a seal is pressed into liquid sealing wax, so did the astral picture impress itself into the etheric body and this in turn molded the forms of the physical body. . . . The whole physical body of man in its plastic forms is nothing else than a product of the pictures of the astral body and the forces of the etheric body.”

All that streamed into the astral body of Anthroposophia from the Christ Ego as the Universal Holy Spirit in conjunction with that which flowed from the Manas element of Vidar united with the etheric forces that emanated from the spiritualized larynx of Anthroposophia. In accompaniment with these processes, the Nirmanakaya forces of Buddha were also permeating the astral body of the unborn Jesus at that time which then impacted the etheric body of Jesus. Together, these pre-fallen etheric forces in turn molded the physical body of Jesus of Nazareth.

As a matter of intrigue, the history of the body of the Nathan Jesus is similar to the history and future of the Earth itself. The Earth existed for a lengthy period of time before Christ assumed it as His own physical body. The body of Jesus also lived most of its years before it too assumed the Christ within it. During the time of Jesus of Nazareth the normal length of life expectancy was much less than what it is today. It may be postulated that at 30 years of age Jesus would have been at his mid-life point or even somewhat beyond it. The same was true of the earth when Christ incarnated into the earth. At the time of the advent of the Christ the earth was to some degree beyond its mid-life point. In the Event of Golgotha the mineral body of Jesus died on the cross and dissolved to ashes while in the tomb. The ashes were then consumed by the earth by means of a fissure that opened in the tomb during the time of the body’s interment. The mineral body of Christ Jesus was displaced after its death by the redeemed Phantom-physical body of the Christ at the time of the Resurrection. Further on, Christ later manifested within the higher sheaths of Jesus of Nazareth while ascending to higher spiritual spheres of the earth. This is the equivalent predestined course of events which the earth will assume in its eventual physical death and ascension. Subsequently, the earth proceeds in its ascension to higher conditions of form by means of the interactive relationship between the earthbound Christ and a Christ-imbued humanity while our cosmos, as a whole, transitions over time into its future Jupiter condition; the New Jerusalem as it is expressed in the Book of Revelation.

The active forces of the Christ Ego as the Holy Spirit endowed the astral body of Anthroposophia with the nascent prototypic stages of achieving the capacity to bring life into being through the faculty of her 'spiritualized' voice. While in the womb of Anthroposophia, the body of Jesus was being worked upon and fashioned in a unique way by the generating life forces of her 'spiritualized larynx' which in turn bestowed this body with all that was essential in becoming the eventual vehicle for the incarnation of the Logos; the Christ. The potential creative power of the human voice may have been alluded to in Rudolf Steiner's "From Jesus to Christ" when he mentions that the Nathan Jesus-child could speak in a language that only Anthroposophia could understand. From Lecture VIII: "Now the body of this Nathan Jesus-child - or, better, his threefold bodily organization - physical body, etheric body, astral body - was formed in a quite special manner. In fact, this body was such that the child showed capacities exactly contrary to those of the Solomon Jesus-child. Whereas the latter was remarkable because of his great gifts in relation to things one can learn externally, it might almost be said that in this respect the Nathan Jesus-child was untalented. You will understand that saying this implies not the slightest deprecation. The Nathan Jesus-child was not in a position to familiarize himself with the products of human culture on Earth. By contrast, the remarkable fact is that he could speak as soon as he was born. A faculty which belongs more to the physical body was thus present in him from his birth. But - according to a good tradition which can be occultly confirmed - the language he spoke could be understood by his Mother only."

Both Anthroposophia and the Nathan Jesus-child carried within them pure etheric forces and throughout the entire gestation period the voice of Anthroposophia impacted these etheric forces that brought about the creation and development of the physical body of the Nathan Jesus-child. In a sense, both souls were in communication with one another during the pregnancy in that their etheric forces intermingled greatly with one another. It was previously mentioned that Vidar, the former Angel of Gautama Buddha, worked as an active force in the formation of the physical body of the Nathan Jesus-child and then, as the Angel who appeared to Christ during His Agony, later revived the physical body of Christ Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane. From the same lecture (VIII) Rudolf Steiner then said the following in regard to the Nathan Jesus:

"It is the disuniting spirits of the Luciferic and Ahrimanic world who have made many languages out of the primal language. The primal language is lost, and can be spoken today by nobody with an Ego which in the course of Earth-evolution has passed from incarnation to incarnation. This Jesus-child, who had not gone through human incarnations, acquired from the starting-point of human evolution the faculty of speaking, not this or that language, but a language of which we can rightly say that it was not comprehensible to those around him. But, because of the inner qualities of heart that lived in it, it was understood by his Mother's heart."

Sergei Prokofieff also addresses this phenomenon in his book "Eternal Individuality":

"This new organ of reproduction, called here the Holy Grail, will, however, as we have seen, be made up of the activity of two transformed organs: the heart and the larynx. Rudolf Steiner speaks about this as follows: `There are within man organs of two different kinds: those which are on the way to becoming imperfect and will gradually fall away, and those which are still in the process of formation. All lower organs, the sexual organs, will fall away. The heart and the larynx, on the other hand, are organs which will be perfected and find their full development only in the future. [November 5, 1907; GA 98]. In another lecture he speaks about this with full clarity: `Above all there will be a transformation of the larynx and the heart. In the future, they will be the organs of reproduction.' [December 17, 1907; GA 98]. The heart and the larynx are the new spiritual organs of reproduction whose interaction, in the far future, 'will bring forth Beings similar to man.' [November 5, 1907; GA 98]. It is they that are engraved, as symbols of the future evolution of a humanity which has overcome earthly birth and death, in the Imagination of the Sun chalice and the lance of love, the transformed heart and larynx."

In footnote 552 to this same work Prokofieff also adds this in regard to the larynx: "However, this future activity of the Maitreya Buddha amongst mankind is only the first stage in the process whereby the human word, through the gradual mastery of its spiritual power, becomes the micrologos. In our fifth post-Atlantean epoch, as has been said, the word is merely the bearer of abstract thoughts, an instrument of the conscious Ego. In the sixth epoch, with the streaming of the Spirit-Self into humanity, the power of the word will extend to the astral body. This will be a time when the Maitreya Buddha will, through the spiritual power of the word, be able to awaken new moral impulses in human souls. In the seventh cultural epoch, with the flowing of the Life-Spirit into mankind, it will become possible to have a direct influence upon the etheric body. Then will man, through the word, be able to influence, for example, the forces of growth and propagation in the plant world. And, finally, in the next epoch, after the War of All Against All, with the outpouring of the impulse of the Spirit-Man into humanity, the possibility will arise of directly influencing the physical body through the word, and, with it, also the physical processes of the surrounding world.
With this threefold evolutionary sequence will also go a corresponding gradual transformation of the human larynx, first in the astral sphere, then in the etheric and, finally - in the physical - into a new organ of reproduction. In other words, the arising in the epoch of the Spirit-Man of the possibility of working through the word into physical substances will also represent the beginning of the fulfillment of the ideal which Rudolf Steiner describes in the following words: `In the future the larynx will not only bring forth words, but will be the creative organ of procreation which will bring forth Beings similar to man' (lecture of 5 November 1907, GA 98)."

In Steiner's lecture cycle "Occult Signs and Symbols," he states in Lecture IV: "At present the larynx is at the beginning of its development, but in times to come it will be transformed into a spiritualized organ of reproduction." "As men in the future will be able to call people into being through their speaking, so it was that the forerunner of mankind, the gods, were gifted with an organ with which they expressed all things that are around us today."

However, in the same lecture he went on to say that when humans achieve this ability the planet "will consist of fiery matter," and humans will call forth humans of fiery form. The voice of Anthroposophia acting upon the body of Jesus has prefigured this future capacity of our Selves. The same voice that gives us the ability to address oneself as I AM will in the future bring forth life itself as the Logos, the Word, creates life now. From "The Spiritual Hierarchies and Their Reflection in the Physical World": "The first stirring of the ‘I AM’ is expressed in speech, in sound. All sound-formation is connected in a particular way with the forces of procreation. . . . The breaking of the voice at puberty, for example, is connected in a definite way with the powers of propagation. There is a hidden relationship between them. Everything related to this sphere in man was summed up by ancient consciousness as the Bull nature of the human Being. This is how the designation of this particular zodiacal sign arose." (Lecture VIII April 17, 1909).

The phenomenon of the human voice and its future potentiality may have also been presented to us at the opening of the Luke Gospel in the narration of Zachariah’s loss of speech. Though the Luke Gospel states that Elizabeth was barren, the actuality may have been that Zachariah was infertile. Zachariah and Elizabeth were childless at the time when Gabriel appeared to Zachariah. Gabriel proceeds to remove Zachariah’s capacity to speak. More likely, the loss of speech by Zachariah may have been induced by Gabriel upon Zachariah as a temporary abatement of Zachariah’s forces of speech which were then transmuted into forces of procreation. This may have also been preordained in the pre-lives of Zachariah and Elizabeth who were elderly at the time of the birth of John the Baptist. Since Zachariah and Elizabeth were elderly, this provided a congruence of their souls with the primordial soul element of John the Baptist. To acquire an understanding of the power that the human voice once had and will revive again in the future Rudolf Steiner says the following from his Luke cycle, Lecture VIII: "In the days of the very ancient Indian civilization, for example, what is called `healing' was a very different matter from what it came to be later on . . . Because by working upon the soul a tremendously strong effect could at one time be produced upon the body, it was possible so to impress the soul of another by means of a word charged with the right impulse of Will that this soul transmitted the effect to the etheric body, and the latter in turn to the physical body. . . . But the time is approaching when such ways of working will again be effective."

In Lecture III from "Building Stones for an Understanding of the Mystery of Golgotha," Rudolf Steiner says this: ". . . man as he is today cannot possibly exist six thousand years hence, any more than it is possible for a man who is now twenty years old to be alive in two hundred years time. We can discover through occult investigation that in the sixth millennium women as they are constituted today will become sterile and that an entirely different reproductive process will exist by that time." From the same lecture cycle in Lecture IV Rudolf Steiner then says: "And bear in mind also what I mentioned recently: that spiritual investigation shows that in the sixth and seventh millennium there will be a decline in fertility. Women will become increasingly sterile. The present method of reproduction will no longer be possible; it must be transposed to a higher plane. In order that the world may not fall into a state of decadence, when opinions as to what is good and evil will be treated medically, in order that good and evil, all personal determination of what is good and evil, should not be recorded merely as a matter to be decided by State regulation or human conventions, in order that this should not arise at a time when the natural order that at present prevails in the human species will of necessity have ceased to maintain the race - for just as in women fertility ceases at a certain age, so too the present method of reproduction in the human species will cease at a certain stage of Earth evolution - in order to forestall this, the Christ Impulse was bestowed upon mankind."

In the lecture cycle "Macrocosm and Microcosm," Rudolf Steiner unfolds the connection of the Human to the heart and the Divine to the larynx. In Lecture XI he states: "And finally we ask: Is there something in man that points to the future? According to yesterday's lecture the human heart is a very ancient organ. In an entirely different form it was already in existence on the Old Moon, and on the Earth has simply been transformed. On the Old Moon there was as yet no brain; but the heart was in existence and moreover had within it the basis for a future transformation. Just as a blossom bears within it the seed of the fruit, so the Old Moon-heart bore within it the Earth-heart. Are there organs in the human body which already today point prophetically to the future? There are indeed such organs. True, they are by no means fully developed today but they will reach greater perfection and after the decline of other organs will belong to man in a higher form when he becomes the future Jupiter-man. One such organ is the larynx. Today it is only on the way towards higher development. It reveals itself in a germinal state and will become something quite different in time to come. If we study the larynx in its relation to the lung, we can say that in a certain way it presupposes the lung, it evolves on the basis of the lung's existence. But we realize at the same time that man is still at an imperfect stage with respect to what he produces in his larynx. Where is the greatest human perfection to be found today? In that which gives man the possibility of calling himself an `I'. This is what sets him above the other Beings of the Earth. Man is an individuality Being centered in the Ego and it is this individuality who passes from one incarnation to another. We can look back into a life which preceded the present life on Earth, then further and further back into the past, and we can also look forward into the future. Man passes on into his following incarnations with whatever he has made his own in his Ego. If any one of you could look back into your earlier incarnations you would find yourself incarnated, for example, in the Greco-Latin epoch, in the Egypto-Chaldean epoch, in the ancient Persian epoch, in the ancient Indian epoch, and so on. But the work accomplished by the human larynx is not in the same sense bound up with the Ego. What the larynx can do comes to expression in each incarnation in a different form of speech; man does not carry it with him from one incarnation to another. Speech is not something that is individualized today. In the course of incarnations a man may belong to different peoples and use different languages, different linguistic idioms. It is therefore clear that speech is not so intimately bound up with the Ego as thinking is. Speech is not bound up with our true individuality, with that which constitutes our real human worth. Speech is something we have in common with other human Beings; it comes to us from conditions outside. Nevertheless there is no denying that speech is something in which our inmost Self, the Spirit, expresses itself.
The quality of feelings and the configuration of thoughts are carried into the sounds of the words; so that we possess in our larynx an organ through which, with our individuality, we are part and parcel of something wrought by the Spirit, but not of something we have ourselves wrought. If speech were not wrought by the Spirit, the Spirit of man could not express itself through that medium. If the larynx were unable to capture in song the tone imparted by the Spirit, the human soul could not express itself through the medium of song. The larynx is an organ which brings to expression spiritual activities, but not individualized spiritual activities. The larynx reveals itself to the spiritual investigator as an organ through which man is membered into a group-soul which he cannot yet bring to the stage of individualization; but the larynx is developing to the point where it will eventually be able to be a receptacle for man's individual activities.
In the future, man will so transform his larynx that through it he will be able to give expression to his own individual reality. That is only a prophetic indication of a process which we must call the formation of a germinal organ which will be transformed in the future. If we pay heed to this we shall find it comprehensible that as individuals we have no power over what our larynx produces, that it is given to us by grace and that we must first grow into it with our individuality. Just as with our own Egohood we are rooted in ourselves, so with our larynx we are rooted in the Macrocosm as a whole. Out of the Macrocosm there still flows into us that which makes us human.
Through our heart we make ourselves men; through the larynx the Macrocosm makes us men. When in a new incarnation we grow into the Macrocosm, we grow into an organism of which the heart is the center, but this organism, this bodily constitution, is unceasingly maintained by the Macrocosm, the forces of the Macrocosm stream into it. Through the larynx there streams into us from the Macrocosm something that is a supreme manifestation of the spirit. There we are linked with the Macrocosm. We not only receive into ourselves influences from the Macrocosm but in a certain sense we also give them back, although we still have no individual control of them. We are born into a folk-language; we have as yet no individual control over what is innate in the folk-spirit.
Hence a great truth is contained in what is said at the very beginning of the Bible: that man's earthly evolution waited until there could be created for him the crowning structure of his breathing apparatus - the larynx which is created by the Spirit, bestowed by God Himself. `God breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life and he became a living soul.' This is an indication of the point of time when there flowed into man that which is connected with the divine, with the Macrocosm. The Human is connected with the heart, the Divine with the larynx.
In that man not only breathes but can also transmute his breathing processes into song and speech produced by the larynx, he has in his breathing a faculty capable of the highest possible development. Hence there are good grounds for saying that man is always developing, that he will rise to higher and higher stages of spirituality. In Oriental philosophy the highest member that man, as Spirit-Man, will develop in the future is called `Atman' - a word derived from `Atmen' (breath). But man must himself participate in the development of this Spirit-Man from the present rudimentary beginnings. He must work at the development of speech and song, in which, as a transformed breathing process, there are infinite possibilities."

In addition to examining the role of the voice of Anthroposophia and that of the human voice, other points of interest are the genealogies of the Luke and Matthew Gospels. Luke 1:35 in part reads, ". . . the Holy One which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." The phrase 'Son of God', or more specifically the term 'Son', is often a reference to the Ego. If we look at Anthroposophia as a figure that is a personification or archetypal picture of the human soul, we have the image of the human soul giving birth to the 'Son of God' within the soul. That is, the soul gives birth to the Ego. The Ego then is born to which it gradually develops over time in a sequence of physical earthly incarnations. It is the human Ego to which Luke is more specifically referring when he gives us the genealogy of Jesus in his Gospel; i.e. "Jesus. . .- as was supposed - the Son of Joseph, the Son of Heli," etc,. Luke's genealogy is purposely placed immediately after the Baptism in the Jordan when the Christ at that point in time had incarnated into the body of Jesus of Nazareth. Not only do the words of the Gospel give us insight into deeper mysteries but the construction of the Gospel reveals deeper truths also. In Luke’s Gospel, the genealogy of Jesus of Nazareth is intentionally placed ‘after’ the incarnation of Christ within a human Form at the time of the Baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist. And because it is purposefully placed after the incarnation of the Christ into a human Form it presages the direction which this incarnation by Christ into human flesh and soul will eventually lead us in our own future evolution. It is the Christ that advances our Ego, the 'Son' of our soul, in its ongoing development. It is at this point where Luke wishes to show that when Christ entered a human Form He brought with Him the 'First Principle' from which every human Ego can draw its life and begin its ascension.

In the Luke Gospel we are given a genealogy that ascends back to Adam, then to God. There is a clear distinction between the genealogy of Luke's Gospel and that of Matthew's Gospel. In Luke's Gospel the physical genealogy and bloodline is not so much the point of emphasis, since the body of the Nathan Jesus is more of a creation of the forces of Anthroposophia's spiritualized voice once the physical conception had been consummated. In Matthew's Gospel, however, the word 'begot' is used throughout the entire genealogy. This is a more emphatic means of description in detailing the physical bloodline of the Zarathustra-Jesus than what Luke's Gospel uses.

In Matthew's Gospel, the actual physicality of a descending genealogy is emphasized in the ancestry of the bloodline by the use of the word `begot'. The bloodline is in a descending order, which is significant because it alludes to the overall historical path of all human Egos descending ever deeper into matter. It is also a genealogy that places much importance on past human 'history'. The genealogy of Matthew's Gospel is the genealogy of Zarathustra. In Luke's Gospel we are given a genealogy that looks to the 'future' though conversely it returns us to Adam. It returns us to Adam in one sense in that it wishes to draw our attention to the time when we had a devachanic consciousness. However, what was lacking in our earliest stages of development was the capacity to stand within the spiritual realms with our own individuated ‘I’-consciousness. Our consciousness then was nothing more than the consciousness of higher spiritual Beings permeating our own souls. We had no true individuated ‘I’-consciousness at that time. Matthew’s genealogy alludes to the Fall of humanity. Only by gradually descending further into matter did we then develop an individuated consciousness. We had moved further and further from the spiritual realms as we moved deeper within matter and consequently deeper within our own Selves. We were then ready to slowly receive and develop our own Ego. Conversely, the genealogy of Luke's Gospel alludes to the ascendancy of human consciousness and, therefore, uses the term Son-Ego throughout until it returns to God. Luke places the genealogy after the Baptism in the Jordan because with the Christ now here on Earth, the human Ego, over future eons, ascends back to God; that is, it evolves and ascends consciously to higher realms. In conjunction with the ascension of humanity, the Earth as the Holy Grail is then spiritualized and ascends to the spiritual worlds. Luke, therefore, shows us that our consciousness ascends back to its former spiritually-endowed, devachanic capacity when he traces the genealogy back to Adam and then back to God; the Christ. However, in contrast to our pre-fallen consciousness, we will have an individuated, awakened, Christ-filled, ascended Ego-consciousness which is to be attained in full freedom. We will have achieved the Ego-endowed Adam-consciousness which reaches up to Christ and to the spiritual worlds.

In conclusion, Rudolf Steiner weaves the revelations of the Holy Spirit as the Father of Jesus, the Baptism in the Jordan and the Sophia at the foot of the Cross into a single whole in the lecture "The Mystery of Golgotha," (December 2, 1906): "John baptized Jesus in the Jordan. A dove descended from heaven and in that moment a spiritual fertilization occurred. The mother of Jesus, who is fertilized here - who is she? The Chela, Jesus of Nazareth, takes his I-Being away in this moment and the highly developed Manas is fertilized and Buddhi enters. The highly developed Manas that receives Buddhi is wisdom, Sophia, the mother fertilized by Jesus' Father. The name Mary, like Maya, indicates in general the name of his mother. We read in the first chapter of Luke's Gospel, `An angel came to her and spoke, Hail, O favored one . . ., Behold, you will conceive . . . and bear a son . . . The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the most high will overshadow you.' The Holy Spirit is the Father of Jesus; the dove that flies down fructifies Sophia, who is found in Jesus.
Therefore, the text should be read, `Standing by the Cross was Sophia, the mother of Jesus.' He says to this mother, “Woman, behold, that is your son.” He himself passed Sophia - who has been in Him - to John. He made John into the son of Sophia and said, “That is your mother,” indicating, ‘Divine wisdom you must henceforth recognize as your mother and dedicate yourself to her alone.’ What John then wrote was this divine wisdom Sophia, who is incarnated in John's Gospel itself. He himself received this wisdom from Jesus and was authorized by Christ to bring this wisdom to the earth."
